FEATURED ARTIST JEROME WHITE

Jerome T. White is a Cleveland-born artist, muralist, and art educator whose work is rooted in faith, history, community, and the human experience. He describes himself as a vessel through which a Higher Power transfers visual messages to the viewer. For White, creating art is liberating—an imaginative process in which dreams, questions, memories, and curiosities come together.

White studied art at Tuskegee University before earning a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art from Baldwin-Wallace University. He continued his studies in Medical Illustration at the Cleveland Institute of Art and later earned a Master of Arts in Art Education from Case Western Reserve University.

In 1994, White began his teaching career in Norfolk, Virginia, where he taught elementary students for three years. He later returned to Cleveland to teach at his alma mater, Cleveland Heights High School. Throughout his career, he has encouraged young artists to develop their God-given talents and has led community mural projects that empower youth to beautify their neighborhoods.

As a fine artist, White explores music, sports, family, history, spirituality, and the human condition. Influenced by Charles White, Winslow Homer, and Dr. John Biggers, he combines figurative imagery and spiritual symbolism to communicate historical and social messages. His art honors resilience, beauty, adversity, endurance, and shared cultural memory. Working in mixed media, acrylic, and oil pastel, White blends styles, textures, and color harmoniously. He compares his creative process to making gumbo: combining distinct ingredients to create a powerful visual experience that “sticks to your soul.
